Auckland - Food and Drink

Auckland’s dining scene is fast emerging as one of the southern hemisphere’s most eclectic and exciting places to sample the best fusion cuisine. Taking influences from Asia, Polynesia and Europe, the city’s thrilling young chefs are creating confident, modern dishes, using the island’s rich produce (from land and sea).

The city’s Mission Bay and Queen’s Wharf areas are the place to head for Auckland’s premier seafood restaurants, but recently, the area’s seen a rise in the number of Thai, Vietnamese and Indian eateries too.

Ponsonby Road is the place to head for fine dining, with sophisticated and elegant options spanning French, Japanese and Chinese cuisines. Same goes for the chic Devenport - with its wine-bars and galleries serving up wholesome and delicious home-cooked fayre.

Traditional Maori cuisine can be harder to find but persevere, and you may find a hotel or tour offering a Hungi night with food, theatre and Maori dancing all part of the evening’s entertainment.

Karangahape Road (known to many simply as “K” Road) offers cheap and cheerful cafes, vegan, vegetarian and wholefood options, while the upscale developments around Viaduct Quay and Britomart are home to steak houses, Italian diners, Sushi joints and grill-bars, all serving fresh and fuss-free meals, complete with colourful cocktails and often a live-music soundtrack.

Further afield, Waiheke Island and West Auckland vineyards produce some of Auckland's most notable wines, serving them in a range of home-spun and unpretentious country restaurants serving juicy New Zealand lamb, fish and farm-fresh produce.
