Vietnam airport guide

There are three airports in Vietnam that operate international flights. Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport (in Ho Chi Minh City) and Noi Bai International Airport (in Hanoi) are the two busiest of these international gateways.

Tân Sơn Nhất Airport

Tân Sơn Nhất, serving Ho Chi Minh City, is a joint civilian and military airport. Between 1968 and 1974 it was one of the busiest military airbases in the world. Today it is the largest and busiest civilian airport in Vietnam, serving as a gateway for almost two-thirds of the country's international arrivals and departures.

The airport operates from two adjacent terminal buildings. Terminal 1 serves domestic flights and Terminal 2 serves international flights.

Facilities at Ho Chi Minh City’s airport

Facilities at Ho Chi Minh City’s airport facilities include:<br?>
- A currency exchange desk and ATMs at the international arrivals area in Terminal 2.
- Information desks in Terminal 2 and outside Terminal 1.
- A tourist information desk at the international arrivals area in Terminal 2.
- A VIP lounge in Terminal 2; it’s open daily from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m.
- Restaurants, bars, fast-food outlets and cafés in the public areas; options after security are more limited.
- A range of shops, with duty-free shopping on the second floor of Terminal 2.
- Medical services in both terminals.
- A left-luggage facility in the arrivals area of Terminal 2.

Internet access is only available in the VIP lounge and in a couple of cafés after security.

There’s no hotel at the airport, although a number of hotels are located a short distance away. Most major international hotels can be found in the city centre a few kilometres south of the airport.

Long-term and short-term parking are available immediately opposite the airport's main entrance.

Getting to and from Tân Sơn Nhất Airport

The airport is located 7 kilometres north-west of Ho Chi Minh City's business district. Motorway 22 directly connects central Ho Chi Minh City to the airport. An airport bus service (Bus #152) runs to Bến Thành Market in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City. The next stop after the market is De Tham Street, at the centre of the backpackers’ area. The trip takes 25 to 35 minutes.

Another bus, number 147, stops in Chinatown (Cholon), in District 5. The trip takes about 30 minutes.

Metred taxis are readily available at the airport. The journey to central Ho Chi Minh City takes 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic. Beware of unofficial taxis, and rather use Mai Linh or Vinasun taxi services. Mai Linh runs a taxi desk from inside the arrivals area.

Noi Bai International Airport

Noi Bai International Airport is located 30 kilometres from the centre of Hanoi. It is the largest airport in North Vietnam and the second busiest in the country. International flights are operated from the newly built Terminal 2.

Noi Bai International Airport facilities

Terminal 2 was inaugurated in early 2015 and serves all international flights. The terminal has four levels – level one is the Arrivals Hall, level three is the Departures Hall and levels two and four house a number of food outlets. The information desk, currency exchange counter and an ATM can be found on the first floor. Terminal 2 includes a few shops, including duty-free shops.

Long-term and short-term parking are available opposite the airport entrance.

Getting to and from Noi Bai International Airport

Travel time between Hanoi Old Quarter and the airport is roughly 45 minutes to one hour, depending on traffic.

The Hanoi city bus runs from the bus stop outside of the Arrivals Hall. Bus #7 runs every half hour from the airport, stopping in Ba Đình District, 4 kilometres from Hanoi Old Quarter. Bus #9 does the route from Ba Đình District to downtown Hanoi.

Airport taxis are available at a fixed price and leave from just outside the arrivals hall.
