Ko Samui Cultural Attractions

No visit to Ko Samui is complete without a trip to the Big Buddha Temple on the north of the island, and it's worth making it part of a day out - most tours of Ko Samui will include a trip around the temple and gardens.

Cultural events take place throughout the year on Ko Samui, the largest ones being those that celebrate major events in the Chinese and Muslim calendars. Chinese New Year and Islamic festivals such as Eid attract large crowds and are colourful and enjoyable festivals - a pleasure to experience. The Songkhran water Festival for April's Thai New Year is a lot of fun. The entire population of Ko Samui turns out to splash everyone in range with water - be it from buckets or water pistols! Because there is such a large number of tourists on Ko Samui, Christmas and New Year are also huge events. Many Ko Samui hotels are decorated with Christmas trees and, somewhat comically given the tropical climate, snowmen.

Ko Samui's new moon parties are hugely popular events which, as the name suggests, take place every full moon. Should you want to experience one during your visit to Ko Samui, check a calendar prior to departure.
