Johannesburg - Airport Guide

O.R. Tambo, the Johannesburg international airport (JNB), is a large, six-terminal hub, and the busiest in the African continent. It is situated around 22 km east of central Johannesburg.

O.R. Tambo is served by a fleet of metered taxis, recognisable by the yellow "taxi" lights on the car’s roof. You should expect to pay around ZAR 250 for the journey into the centre.

Most of the big city hotels are about a half-hour drive from the airport, and most big hotels operate their own shuttle bus services to and from arrivals/departures lounges. Make sure you check with your hotel first.

Private minibus services can be booked at kiosks in the international arrivals hall, close to the airport entrance. You’ll be wise only to book one of the operators with a presence inside the airport. Don’t be tempted by the ‘cheaper’ offers outside, as these will be on unlicensed buses. Expect to pay around ZAR 100.

Since 2010’s World Cup, Johannesburg airport has a rail extension to the suburb of Sandton. Soon, this will link onwards to Johannesburg CBD and Pretoria. Expect to pay around ZAR 100 one way.
